The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Academy provides training for all law enforcement personnel and includes basic sheriff’s academy, reserve academy, firearms training, and continuing education, in-service and advanced training. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Academy was certified as a law enforcement academy by Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) in 1993. At that time the academy began training reserve deputies. In 1997 the Deputy sheriff's academy began training deputies in full time academy classes.The Jefferson County Sheriff's Training Academy is the only APOSTC certified academy to provide specialized Deputy sheriff's training Deputy sheriff’s attending the Basic Academy receive the 480-Hour APOSTC Minimum Standards Curriculum and a 160- Hour Specialized Deputy Sheriff’s Curriculum, which emphasizes the special responsibilities given to the Office of Sheriff by State of Alabama Law. This training takes 14-1/2 weeks to complete. Our Reserve Academy is open to all reserve/auxiliary officers in the State of Alabama. The Reserve Academy consists of the 480-Hour APOSTC curriculum and classes are held on weekends. It takes one year to complete this training. The Academy also provides and/or hosts basic and advanced training for continuing education credit. It also host many instructor development courses. These courses are available to all sworn law-enforcement officers throughout the state. Courses can be designed to meet specific needs. |
